The last comment is interesting. Elsewhere, I've heard editors complain about the increasingly bloated manuscripts that have become standard. No more Flauberts rolling about on the floor sweating and biting the carpet, looking for the perfect word. And regarding photographs, I know for certain over half my iPhoto collection would be thrown out if it were printed.

Guy, if by local helper you mean one of the Japanese staff/volunteers, I didn't see that. And truth be told, I can't verify that the people I did see tossing flags were coaches, but they were officials of some sort with that country's delegation, I'm pretty sure about that. I think this is what got me....I mean, in the past, this sort of thing was spontaneous, some exuberant fan would thrown down a flag and the athlete would wrap himself/herself in it. These days, there's no spontaneity at all. (Not helped by press photographers yelling to the athletes to turn the flag the proper orientation!) And no subversiveness as well. I mean, can you imagine what sort of hue and cry there would have been had one of the US relay team members decided he didn't want the flag cape? Would be interesting to speculate how that would go over in post 9/11 America vis-a-vis the Smith/Carlos action of 1968.

Guy-
thanks for commenting and directing me towards these posts. (I changed the links to these short URL ones as the original URLs were messing up the formatting).

I have to admit that I had not heard of Seicho Matsumoto and therefore didn't mention him by name when I referenced the Schreiber book. (I will recitify that in the post). Thanks for bringing him to my attention. I see that there will be a Matsumoto book entitled Pro-Bono published by Vertical later this year. But I'd really love to read this non-fiction expose mentioned (Black Fog Over Japan). Very tantalizing. And I now have a good reason to finally watch my Criterion copy of The Bad Sleep Well, which has been sitting on my shelf unwatched for some time now....

I may well be wrong, but on more than one occasion I thought I saw a local helper toss the relevant flag to the winning athlete rather than coaches - though perhaps this was in cases when a non-favourite bagged the kin medal.

Perhaps this is unneccesary, but since you said you were only familiar with the name Sedaris, have you heard him read his own stories? I think his stuff is hilarious, but his childlike voice and deadpan delivery put it over the top.

I second "Me Talk Pretty One Day." I enjoyed the cross cultural aspects of his stories about moving to France.
