A bit of housecleaning, for my own reference more than anything:
I’ve upgraded this site to Movable Type 2.63, and made a few changes to the template, mostly reflected in the left and right sidebars.
On the left, I’ve added a “Recent Comments” listing, as well as a “Selected Musings — Via the Archives” section listing 10 articles written over the course of this site that I’m particularly happy with and that I don’t want to remain hidden in the archives. Both of these changes arise from some discussions I had last week with fellow bloggers at the Tokyo blogger’s party. On the right, I (finally!) updated the rotating images that are pulled from my (recently updated but still not current) Japan 2002 photo diary.

a great plus of the internet is the way everything so quickly just dissapears – even if it takes a few years. that site you remember, just isn’t there anymore. and blogs, by their design, are even more non-commital. and yet i started the consumptive blog as an addition to the art/gallery – and really see what i do, the sort of net curating as an extension of my artistic practice. sure, most of what i write or link should inevitabely slide away.
still there are things, here and here, that are more than the sum of the parts, things that should stick around. writings that maybe new viewers haven’t seen yet and would most likely enjoy. i think its appropriate.
and so, whole heartedly agree. a slot for the best of. i just added some to consumptive, unbeknownst to your doing so here. i think its invevatible. one no longer trusts the archives to point to what stands out. you can sort of edit yourself, while helping readers to the good stuff.
Kurt!!
What the hell happened to Georgia!!
god it was really making the website special and stricking, more lyrical and exciting to read, because the typeface was immediately telling you: Hey what you re about to read is lovely musing, enjoy it.
But what!!? you back in Arial or boring Sans…
I have to agree that the other changes of content are good! but the layout was better before I think. No big deal, you haven t changed much but those little details that were so nice as a break from the other websites have disappeared… fonts and dotted lines!!
God I hope you don t change the light blue either.
Sorry, had to let my graphic designer / typographer voice come out.
Great pics though.
take care.

ok, about Georgia, maybe my computer at work doesn t have it, which might explain… hehehe
but the dots… I like the dots. 😉
take care.

Paul-
I was wondering if you were perhaps looking at a different site! I assure you I haven’t changed any design elements, just adding things to the left and right sidebars….and blue? where are you seeing blue! Please, anyone else seeing blue?! Aside from the photos, the site is fairly (too?) monotone.
James, your’s is actually one of the few blog archives that I’ve gone through, although admittedly that was a long time ago (like when I didn’t have a job!). I can barely keep up (no, check that, I can’t keep up) with all the blogs I want to, so who has time for archives! But like you, I worry that all this stuff is just sitting dormant collecting dust behind the front page, it seems really a shame. While I do like the articles I chose, it wasn’t so much to highlight my writing, but just to highlight that hey, there is writing in the archives (sounds silly, but especially for non-bloggers, I wouldn’t be surprised that many people visit and think the front page is it, once is drops off there it somehow gets deleted off the server! Another impetus for this is the realization that I get Google hits for lots of stuff (like my Sumo article) that isn’t on the index page by the time the searcher comes here looking for it….this has been a persisten worry….
well i think those writings about your hawaiian youth/photos are great. and the some other things – the dead pachinko parlor stand. and both i think are very representative of what you do here. cheers.
oups, I mean what I call blue is actually your boxes background color… a very light grey blue if you like… 😉
but I swear I seem to remember your underlink line dotted or the border of your title boxes dotted?
no? god, I’ve gone mad then… anyway. It s great that you are pulling some old articles back on the frontpage.
take care.
