Snapped this earlier tonight in the train, on the way home. It’s an advertisement for Sony’s So-net ADSL service, going with a Boogie Nights 70’s theme. I suppose in America I wouldn’t think twice about such a campaign (though perhaps I should), but here in Japan, where there’s a history of products being sold using caricatured portrayals of blacks, I was a bit taken aback.

Have you seen the the television ad for So-net ADSL? They have the same theme with a bunch of people who seemingly stepped right out of the 70s dancing to some funky music. It was pretty amusing.
Pathetic. That’s the best they could come up with? Yahoo BB is eating their lunch and they really think they’re gonna preserve their dwindling marketshare (what is it – 1.5%?) with a retardate campaign like that?
Don’t even get me started on whether the people So-net needs to reach are even anywhere close to cognate with the audience that’ll relate to those Earth, Wind and Fire parodies…
Yep, totally agree Adam, don t know where they got that idea, and how they expected people to connect with it. Can t connect with the advert, can t connect with So-net. Though I guess they re only supposed to look like 3 big-haired-“kawai” dudes. Huh?!
Reminds me of afroken. 😉
