Kodachrome and Velvia San Francisco No. 5 — missing the view

View from my apartment, corner of Haight and Fillmore, San Francisco, October 31, 1994: click for larger image (42K)

I don’t miss San Francisco much, despite what you may think seeing as I’ve been publishing photos of it here for the last week. But I do miss the view I had from my last apartment, seen here in its nighttime version. (I will say this, I did luck out when it came to the views from my last two San Francisco apartments). And I miss the apartment itself. No great shakes (except for the view), but it was the first place in San Francisco I lived in by myself, without roommates. And it was the San Francisco apartment I lived in the longest, having spent nearly 8 of my 14 years here. Oh well, life goes on.

This photo was taken on Halloween, 1994. The light that can be seen emanating from the center of this image is that of the Castro District, center of San Francisco’s gay and lesbian community, and the scene every year of a huge look-at-my-costume fest on Halloween. On a clear night like this, the sounds of the massive block party would waft into my apartment, tugging at me to come out and join the revelry.

  1. “…, the sounds …would waft into my apartment, tugging at me to come out and join the revelry.”

I hear ya Kurt. In this case the words made the picture !

  2. The last time I was in SF I had a look at a real estate mag, and the rents were just outrageously expensive. I don’t know how you could afford to live alone. Selling crack?
I would like to be transported right now via dokodemodoa to Max’s Diner on Third Street.
You get a free round of drinks if anyone on our staff comes up and says, “is everything all right?”  When we ask questions, they’ll be good ones.

  3. Nils, I don’t know SF particularly well, but you made me laugh out loud at your mention of Doraemon’s dokodemodoa! I LOVE love LOVE that concept! For me, if I could be transported to anywhere in SF right now, it would have to be butter on 11th Street. Its motto? “Two turntables and a microwave”! (serving tater-tots, beanie weanies, twinkies, and tv dinners….while spinning cool laidback blend of deep and progressive house). Yeah….

Kurt, I’ve really been enjoying the mood and colour tonings of your San Francisco series. Looking forward to more 🙂

  4. I too love that “dokodemodoa” expression and concept!

You know it’s funny, Nils I often went to Max’s, as I worked for 5 years at a place on 2nd street. Biggest portions in town! And Lil, that place is just down the street from another place I worked, although I think it’s a relatively recent addition. Both places very SF though…

Nils, one secret to living in SF: rent control. When I moved into this place, I paid $625/month for what are two rooms (this was 1994). At the time, over half my paycheck. However, at the height of the dot-com era (late ’99), less ideal apartments in the same building were going for $1500/month, while my rent was somewhere around $675 (at that time, may have changed now, rents were allowed to go up 4% a year on occupied apartments). No doubt when I gave notice I was moving out, the owner did a little jig.
