The great torii at Miyajima Island. Having seen its representation so much one wonders if it needs to be seen in person. But there it is, one of the 3 famous views in Japan. At any rate, a good decision to arrive early, before the crowds, before the omiyage shops open. Seemingly only locals on the ferry over, probably to tend those souvenir shops. Reminded me of the time I once took a 6:30 a.m. train to Venice.

in Hiroshima prefecture. Just spent a pleasurable afternoon here despite working on less than 2 hours sleep. Came here mainly because of Ozu and glad I did. Might have more to say later, but in the meantime go to www.mediatinker.com and do a search for “Onomichi” to pull up Kristen’s wonderful travel journal entry from 1999.

Now somewhere near Biwa lake, headed towards Kyoto. Lots of snow on the ground here, making for a very picturesque view as we whiz by (not depicted very well above). Didn’t sleep a wink on the overnight train so I’m really going to crash when(ever!) I get to Hiroshima.
