Walking along devastation trail

That’s me, in 1969 or 70, I think. This was taken on the island of Hawaii (or “Big Island” as we usually call it), in the Kilauea Iki crater of the Kilauea volcano. The crater had famously erupted some 10-plus years prior, in 1959. I emailed this photo to my mother a few months ago hoping she could provide some recollections about this trip, but sadly my mother has given up her short-lived attempt at using the Internet, and thus no reply was forthcoming. I myself remember next to nothing about this trip. My mother did write some information on the back of the photo:

Me in Kilauea Iki crater, Hawaii: back of photo

The photographer wasn’t either of my parents but rather Jack Matsumoto, credited by my mother. Matsumoto was a staff photographer for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, the paper my father wrote for for almost 20 years. He was a family friend, but I don’t know if he was travelling with us on this trip or happened to be on the Big Island on some other assignment. (In that regard, it’s quite likely that we were on this trip because my father was also on assignment).
