Getting a new gaijin card

Why did they give you a new one? Don't they just add a new date in the back? That's what they always do to mine, which I never understand since the new date is instantly smudged and unreadable. Also, it reminds that I need to go renew mine, as I got my visa renewed last month.

The first time, yeah they just wrote something on the back (which as you say, was rendered unreadable fairly quickly). But this time I had to take a new photo and fill out a new app and everything.
