of my last post, another "manner" campaign poster. This one is actually part of a "Manner Poster Exhibition" sponsored by Eidan, the main subway company in Tokyo. If it's not clear from the picture, this poster addresses in part one of my biggest pet peeves in the States -- people speaking on their cellphones on public transportation -- which is now getting to be a problem here. It also takes on yawning in public and blaring music through one's headphones too loud. All while showing three able-bodied people sitting in seats reserved for the elderly, those pregnant, or those disabled -- a problem so common you'd be forgiven if you assumed the people usually sitting in these seats were in fact disabled, i.e. blind.

The lady on the left isn't yawning but putting on makeup.

And so she is! I stand corrected. When I was writing this I couldn't quite remember, and it was impossible to see the small cellphone pic clearly.

Come to think of it, I don't think yawning on a train would be all that bothersome, though I suppose it would depend on what type of yawn it was. On the other hand, putting on makeup in public transportation is a big pet peeve in my book....I find it utterly disgusting, especially when they start to use that eyelash press contraption which makes them look like they're auditioning for The Clockwork Orange. My humble opinion is that if you don't have time in the morning to do something you don't really need to be doing in the first place, you shouldn't do it on the train and force your fellow passengers to watch!

and while I'm here, I found these posters on Eidan's site (but curiously, not the one I'm showing):

My favourite is the child getting up to give his seat to an old man - the caption is something along the lines of 'make someone's day and the smle you get in return will make yours'.
My extensive research shows that pregnant bellies are invisible to all but young mothers, and they only stand if you wince a bit, sigh loudly and rub your back. My husband says I should just ask somebody to stand, embarrass them a bit - but I couldn't possibly!
